Square Footage Calculator

Find the square footage of a room, an L-shaped space, a circle or triangle, or add up several rooms. Fractions of a foot are welcome.

How it's calculated

Area is length times width for a rectangle. An L-shape is the overall rectangle minus the missing notch. A circle is π × radius², and a triangle is half the base times the height.

Results are also given in square yards (for carpet), squares (100 sq ft, for roofing) and square meters.

Worked example

An L-shaped room 30 × 24 ft overall with a 12 × 10 ft notch: 720 − 120 = 600 sq ft.

Field notes

  • Measure wall to wall at floor level, not along baseboards.
  • Break odd rooms into rectangles and add them up with the Several rooms tab.
  • For flooring, add 10% waste; for real estate, follow your local measuring standard.

Common questions

How do I calculate the square footage of a room?
Multiply the length by the width in feet. A 12 × 15 ft room is 180 sq ft.
How do I convert inches to feet for area?
Divide inches by 12 before multiplying: 6" is 0.5 ft, 9" is 0.75 ft. Or type 15 6/12 for 15'-6".
How many square feet are in a square yard?
9.
